While pool chemicals are certainly an important part of the winterization process, there are many other steps that must be followed. By making sure the pool is closed properly, owners are working to ensure the opening in the spring is easier as well. These general guidelines can assist in the closing process.
- The owner should begin by locating the winter cover and having the winterizing supplies handy. As fall has arrived, leaves and other debris may have entered the water, so vacuum the pool thoroughly to avoid staining the liner over the winter. Also try to remove existing stains to make sure the surface is at its cleanest.
- After cleaning, the water level should be adjusted. Many manufacturers suggest draining the water so that the level is 3-6 inches below the skimmer for solid covers and between 12 and 18 inches below the skimmer for mesh covers.
- Another step, in the process, involves balancing the water chemistry. Using pool chemicals of choice, the pH should be adjusted to fall between 7.2-7.6 and the alkalinity should lie in the range of 110-150ppm. Other chemicals such as a shock product and an algaecide are highly recommended to prevent the liner from bleaching and to keep scaling from occurring during the winter months. These products should be allowed to circulate for several hours in order to achieve optimal benefit.
- Depending upon the type of filtration system used, the filter will need to be cleaned +/or unplugged. Cartridge filter elements should be removed and cleaned. After 2-3 years, a new cartridge filter should be purchased. Sand filters need to be backwashed to extend the life of the filter. Every 7-10 years, the sand filter should be replaced. In the case of a DE filter, the filter should be backwashed and the filter tank drained and the backwash valve left open.
- At this point, equipment such as hoses, toys, skimmer, fittings, plugs, etc. should be cleared out of the pool area and stored for next season. Theses items need to be completely dry so they don't accidentally freeze and get damaged during the winter. Water should be blown out of items such as, but not limited to: pumps, blowers, and chlorinators.
- Installing the winter cover is a final and very critical part of the closing process. There are a variety of covers available for above-ground models and it really depends upon the owner and the outdoor setting to determine which type is most suitable. Winter covers can be made of mesh or polyethylene. Mesh style covers filter about debris while allowing snow and rain to fall through. Solid covers made of polyethylene prevent everything from entering the water. Both types should be checked for any damage from the prior winter. Rips and tears should be repaired with a patch kit if possible. However, if the damage is too severe, the cover should be replaced. It is advisable to check periodically to ensure that the cover is securely fastened.
These guidelines may seem laborious and time consuming, but they are extremely important to the longevity of the pool. For those people who do not want to handle the closing on their own, many local companies provide winterization services, winter pool chemicals, and covers. Regardless of how it's done, it must be done - winterize now!
